Could Russian Movie ‘Zaschitniki’ Be The Most Epic Addition To The Superhero Universe In 2016?

Superheroes are all the rage these days and Russia’s making sure it’s not getting left out of the commotion. Whilst Marvel and DC have been doing their thing and churning out movies and series on the regular, something has been brewing over in the East. Getting in on the superhero craze, Russian studios have now dropped a trailer for Zaschitniki (which means ‘protectors’ in the language) and it looks pretty epic to say the least.

The neo-noir feature is set in an alternative universe, in which the Soviet Union still stands. A group of individuals are culled from various satellite countries and turned into superheroes in order to protect the USSR from supernatural threats. Here’s the IMDB synopsis:

“During the Cold War, an organization called ‘Patriot’ created a super-hero squad, which includes members of multiple soviet republics. For years, the heroes had to hide their identities, but in hard times they must show themselves again.”

Here are some images from the released trailer:

The ghost of Lenin still rules supreme

“Genetics for the good of the nation”

Doctors work to manipulate the DNA of a few chosen individuals

Superpowers start pumping through their blood

They are gearing up to strike (or protect!)

If you’re like me and absolutely gagging for more information (because let’s be real, the trailer is very cryptic), thankfully the movie’s Instagram shares some more snippets of information.

“In the photo is Hana in the desert… the most interesting thing being rehearsed right now.”
