Chevrolet lifted the covers off the sixth-generation Camaro at an event in Detroit’s Belle Isle, today. The new Camaro retains the iconic design cues and offers a significant bump in performance, thanks to a host of new technological upgrades and new engines.
The GM Alpha platform has helped the new Camaro shed over 90 kilograms, and the base trim now weighs just 1,300 kilograms. The new Camaro is available with three engine options – a 2.0-litre LTG turbocharged four-cylinder unit, a 3.6-litre LGX naturally aspirated V6 and the 6.2-litre LT1 small-block V8, from the vicious C7 Corvette. Customers can opt for either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission with these engines.
The new Camaro comes with a new Drive Mode Selector that can be adjusted in four modes – Snow/Ice, Tour, Sport and a Track setting, the latter of which is exclusive to the Camaro SS. The Camaro SS also gets a new Magnetic Ride Control suspension from the ZL1 Corvette, which significantly improves the car’s handling. Changes to the interior includes two eight-inch screens and a new Interior Spectrum Lighting system, which ‘blings’ up the interior with the option of 24 different ambient lighting effects.
GM seemed to have given the new Camaro’s designers and engineers a free run in its attempt to hunt down its arch rival – the Ford Mustang. GM will start the production of the new Camaro at its facility in Michigan, later this year, with deliveries expected to commence in late 2015.
