It’s no secret that the stain of his first outing as the Merc with a Mouth still hangs over Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds like a particularly grumpy looking cloud with its mouth stitched together.
Yes, I am of course talking about 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in which Reynolds first portrayed Wade Wilson / Deadpool – but not as we know him. Not only is his iconic mouth sealed shut but oddly enough he’s granted Adamantium blades which protrude from his arms in place of his usual, non-arm protruding swords.
It’s safe to say that the fanbase had a largely negative reaction towards this iteration of the character, and Reynolds himself has never been secretive about his distaste for that particular Wade Wilson, particularly in the recent DeadpoolAustralia Day video announcement. You know the one, here it is again:
We feel you Reynolds, we feel you.
Of course this isn’t the first time Reynolds and Hugh Jackman (who portrays the iconic Wolverine / Logan in the X-Men series and stand alone films) have riffed off of each other, echoing their comic book counterparts.
Born of the same procedure that created Wolverine, Deadpool has long been affiliated with the X-Men in the comics, sometimes as antagonist, sometimes fighting alongside them, but most notably with his sometime friend and longtime rival Wolverine.
And despite Reynolds’s bashing Jackman’s centerpiece film the two are pretty buddy buddy in real life, with Reynolds in his Deadpool makeup recently imitating the Wolverine actor in a video via Jackman’s Instagram
Of course all these closely linked photographs and videos have led to much speculation that we’d see Jackman popping up as Wolverine for a cameo in the upcoming Deadpool solo movie.
Hugh Jackman will be hanging up his Wolverine claws after his turn as Logan in the upcoming Wolverine 3, and though there’s no solid evidence yet that he’ll be popping up in Deadpool Reynolds himself said he’d love for his “old mate” to appear:
“God I hope so, that would be really nice. I dunno, we’ll see. It seems like he’s open to it, but it’s gonna be more of a scheduling issue than anything else.”
A new photo posted recently on Hugh Jackman’s Twitter account continues this bromantic run, with Jackman posting a smiling selfie of the two of them with the caption “Seriously, Mate. You’ve got to stop following me. SECURITY!!!”

Whilst he himself may not have enjoyed his turn as Wade Wilson / Deadpool / Weapon X in X-Men Origins: Wolverine Reynolds has certainly been making up for it as the fully realized Deadpool in all the recent trailers and other promo material around the upcoming film; and he’s certainly captured much love from the fans for his faithful portrayal of the chimichanga loving mercenary.
All in all it’s looking like Deadpool is set to be the most off the wall superhero movie yet, even if he is without his old mate Wolverine at his side.
