Sarah Varley was raped when she was 19 years old and developed a case of PTSD, following which she developed germ- and vomit-phobia two years later. She stopped eating and would take only three raisins and walnuts each for breakfast. As a result, she lost a lot of weight, coming to weigh only 41 kg, sparking fears that she won’t be able to survive.
Eight years ago, Varley came in contact with the wolves and wolf dogs at a shelter managed by her cousins, reports Metro. Soon, she formed an unbreakable bond with them, one that helped her survive.
“I do not know if I would be here today without the wolves.
Before I was scared of everything around me, but when I was with a wolf I had a legitimate reason to be scared and respectful which gave me something to be focused on.
I think that respect and that need to be present is what helped me so much…It allowed me to take back power over a traumatic event in my life and it has helped me heal.
I am so grateful to these animals – I feel very lucky.”
28-year-old Varley spent eight hours with the animals every day which she believes helped save her life.
She now hopes to find her own wolf and wolf dog sanctuary to help other people – in need of mental therapy – to find their solace in these animals.
