Refused Rs 100, beggar drags man to death

In a bizarre incident, a beggar, along with a passenger jumped in front of a speeding train, after the latter allegedly refused to give him alms.

The shocking incident took place at Phafoond railway station in Auraiya district on late Tuesday night.

GRP (Government Railway police) said that the passenger, identified as Sarvesh Kumar – a resident of Lalpur area of the district, was waiting for the train at platform no 2. He was approached by a 25-year-old beggar, who asked for alms of Rs 100. However, Sarvesh refused and shooed him away.

Piqued over the refusal, the beggar reportedly used foul language and caught hold of Sarvesh. He dragged Sarvesh towards the railway track and jumped in front of the speeding Delhi-Kolkata Rajdhani Express. The two died at the spot.

Sarvesh had come from Auraiya’s Lalpur to attend the ‘terhvi’ ritual of his relative in Sahar village of the district. “The incident occurred at around 10.30pm while he was waiting for the train to return home,” A GRP official told to TOI.

He added, “As per eyewitness, Sarvesh cried for help, but none came forward to his rescue. The beggar caught hold of him and in a spur of moment jumped in front of the fast approaching train near the track. The duo died at the spot.”

The GRP police and the RPF personnel visited the spot. Railway officials also reached the spot.

The GRP cops later recovered the severed body parts of the two scattered along the railway track and dispatched it to mortuary for postmortem.

The GRP however further claimed that preliminary investigations revealed that the beggar was mentally deranged. “He was spotted loittering near the railway station premises since past few days,” GRP further said. GRP personnel also recovered some documents from the possession of beggar, which suggested that he was from Jharkhand, informed a GRP official.
