‘Suicide Squad’: Who’s Who, From Harley Quinn To Deadshot

Last night’s “Suicide Squad” team reveal from director David Ayer has us all super pumped to see what the movie has in store for us next year. But if you’re not an avid fan of DC Comics, the new group shot looks a little less like a super crime-fighting team and more like “The Grizzled Anti-Hero Hour Featuring Harley Quinn.” Which sounds pretty rad too, not gonna lie, but wouldn’t it be nice to know what all those grizzled anti-heros are named?

First formed in 1987, The Suicide Squad (also known as Task Force X) as we now know it is a secret team of reformed villains who go on dangerous, life-threatening covert missions in exchanged for reduced prison sentences. They operate out of Belle Reve Prison, a penal institution for super-powered criminals, and are led by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). Over the years the line-up has changed here and there, but there are some characters you should definitely know about before you see the movie:

  1. Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie)

    harleen

Nowadays Harley is an iconic DC rogue, but she didn’t actually get her start in the comics with everyone else; her first appearance was in “Batman: The Animated Series,” where she was intended to be a one-off character but quickly gained popularity until she was as ubiquitous as the Joker himself.Originally known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, Harley was a psychiatrist treating the Joker at Arkham Asylum until she fell in love with him and helped him escape. The two have shared a complicated, abusive relationship with one another, but after a recent falling out with the Joker she joined the Suicide Squad and has since reinvented herself as an anti-hero — and a roller derby girl, which we’re guessing is where the inspiration for her new costume lies.

  2. Deadshot (Will Smith)

    deadshots

Thanks to his appearances on “Arrow” and “Smallville,” we’re guessing you already have a passing familiarity with Floyd “Deadshot” Lawton. But in case you don’t, here’s the short version: considered the best sharpshooter in the world, Deadshot first tried to take over the Gotham City underworld and was sent to prison by Batman, only becoming an assassin for hire after he was released. He was also a founding member of the Suicide Squad’s Task Force X, which is understandable given his well-known death wish.
  3. Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney)

    boomerang

In addition to being Australian, George “Digger” Harkness is known as a recurring antagonist of The Flash who uses — surprise! — boomerangs as weapons. He’s also the biggest jerk of the whole squad, and exhibits no regard for the safety of his fellow team members during missions. Sometimes he even calls them Autralian racial slurs for funsies. Yup, real charmer, that one.
  4. Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman)

    flagg2

The leader of the Suicide Squad, Rick Flag is a former fighter pilot who began going on suicide missions after his entire unit was destroyed
  5. Enchantress (Cara Delevingne)

    enchantress

June Moone is a freelance artist turned sorceress who joins the Suicide Squad to help keep her villainous “Enchantress” persona in check. Basically, imagine Scarlet Witch’s powers combined with the split personality and penchant for green of The Hulk, and that’s DC’s Enchantress. (There’s ALSO a Marvel character with the same name well, so keep that in mind)
  6. Katana (Karen Fukuhara)

    katana

Katana, aka Tatsu Yamashiro, is an expert martial artist whose “Soultaker Sword” stores the spirit of whoever is killed with it — including her dead husband, whom she sometimes has conversations with. She’s also probably the least villainous of all the Suicide Squad team members, having also been a member of the Justice League, the Birds of Prey and Batman’s Black Ops team, The Outsiders.
  7. El Diablo (Jay Hernandez)

    el diablo2

As his villain name would suggest, Chato Santana’s thing is pryokinesis, aka setting fire to stuff with his mind. He’s also the third person to hold the “El Diablo” title, the first being Lazarus Lane from the “Jonah Hex” comics. He turned himself in willingly to the police after setting a building alight during a gang dispute and finding out there’d been innocent women and children still inside who were killed in the fire.
  8. Slipknot (Adam Beach)

    slipknot2

Believed to have once been a chemist, Christopher “Slipknot” Weiss is a minor villain whose gimmick involves unbreakable, super-adhesive ropes. He was sent to kill the atomic superhero Firestorm, but failed and ended up in prison. Adam Beach’s role is not yet officially confirmed, but given the ropes he’s sporting, it’s pretty likely that’s who he’ll be playing.
  9. Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje)

    killercroc

Waylon Jones was born with a form of regressive atavatism — meaning, in layman’s terms, that he’s an evolutionary throwback — that gives him reptilian scales all over his skin. While the condition makes it sort of tough for him to go grocery shopping in public, it also bestows him with almost impenetrable skin, super strength and speed, an enhanced sense of smell, and regenerative powers, all of which really came in handy when he was trying to become the crime kingpin of Gotham. Unfortunately it didn’t work out due to Batman reasons.Croc’s never been a member of the Suicide Squad in the comics, so it’s possible that he’ll be the target of one of the team’s missions — but he’s also been featured in all of the cast photos so far, so we’re guessing not. Either way, it’s good to have him aboard!

  10. Joker (Jared Leto)

    joker

What can we say about Jared Leto Joker that hasn’t been said already? Nothing, except that it’s odd he hasn’t appeared in any of the cast photos so far — which has cause many to speculate that he won’t be a member of the team at all, but the villain they’re trying to take down.

“Suicide Squad” hits theaters on August 5, 2016……….
